Acne: I Get It

This week I just saw the sweetest mother and daughter as new patients. The daughter is in her teens and mom is in her 40s. Reason for visit: ACNE for both. It can strike at any age.

Treating acne is near and dear to my heart because number one my parents had it which means I have it (yup derms can have skin that misbehaves too) and I just UNDERSTAND completely how frustrating it can be. 🌞Bright side--It has made me close friends. I'm pretty sure @echavezmiller and I bonded over this frustration in high school years ago. We thought we were masters at covering our acne meticulously with drug store Cover Girl powder that in retrospect matched our skin tones poorly 😂. (I can smell the sweet powder of those dark brown shiny plastic compacts as I reminisce).

This mother and daughter had been using expensive face washes and face masks but weren't tackling acne at its root, specific to them.

We need to address acne based on why it's happening in the first place. Traditionally our treatments aim to address how sticky or adhesive your skin cells are, bacteria, oil production and the hormonal effect on oil production, as well as inflammation.

I know what works for me: gentle cleansing twice a day, sparse yet regular use of a retinoid (because I have very sensitive skin) alternating with an azaleic acid, brand MDs phytoquinone fader for post inflammatory pigmentation, brand MDs needle free serum, but most of all an oral prescription called Spironolactone to address MY core acne issue---> hormones! Oh and I try to avoid processed sugars, super carb loaded foods, whey protein, and dairy. Regular facials with a skilled aesthetician is the cherry on top.

I am also so thankful for other therapies like Isotretinoin aka "Accutane" that change lives for the right patients with the right counseling under the right circumstances. Yes I have been on this too, along with many people I'm close to.

Before you try "miracle" internet acne remedies, go see a dermatologist. We will help you, inform you, tailor therapy for your needs, and of course follow up.

Throwback Thursday to high school when acne first says hello for most.
